British MP: Zelensky is talking nonsense about Crimea
Ukraine must admit that it will not get Crimea back. This statement was made in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper by Richard Balfe, a member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, against the backdrop of the promise of the new Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to begin negotiations with Vladimir Putin with a demand for the return of the peninsula.
“...In the future, Ukraine will have to admit that it will not get Crimea back. And that’s where we need to start,” Balfe said.
He admitted that the residents of Crimea have always sought reunification with Russia.
“I was there 10 or 15 years ago when it was part of Ukraine. Almost everyone I met there complained that the peninsula belonged to Ukraine. I don’t think that the desire to be part of this country has ever been present in Crimea,” the parliamentarian said.
“I think that Russia, like many other countries, has its own legitimate national interests. If during communism the Russians had wanted to establish a military base in, say, Belgium, we would have been very upset. Therefore, Russia cannot be blamed for its reaction to the fact that the United States is deploying its military formations in Poland.
We - at least in our parliament - need to finally agree on new rules of the game,” Balfe also said.
