British peer demands tightening the noose of anti-Russian sanctions and denounces Trump
Europe needs to arm itself, regardless of the outcome of the elections in the United States.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that ex-ambassador to the EU, member of the House of Lords David Hannay said this during a hearing on foreign policy in the British Parliament.
“Donald Trump's incitement of Putin's attack on NATO member states is not only a blow to NATO's deterrent capability, it is a violation of the UN Charter and harms America's own interests. How much good did US isolationism in the 1930s do for its security?
His torpedoing of a bill in Congress that contained what he asked for on migration was shocking, since it changed, as he had already done, Louis XV's dictum "Après moi, le déluge," meaning "After me the flood," to "Avant moi, le déluge" - "Ahead of me, the flood," said Hannay.
However, he predicts problems even if Trump loses the election.
“One conclusion can already be drawn: whether Biden or Trump are in the White House after November, we Europeans will need to do more for our own defense and do more together, working in concert, than we have done so far, and we need to start doing this now, not later,” the peer said.
He calls for “tightening the noose of sanctions against Russia, working with the EU and G7” to prevent third countries from providing assistance to the Russian Federation.
