British political scientist believes that Putin saw weakness in Biden's eyes
Russia's current demand for security guarantees from NATO has actually become an ultimatum to the West.
British political scientist James Sherr stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Sherr, US President Joe Biden began to show weakness immediately after coming to power.
“Whatever Biden's real intentions, he appears to have shown weakness in Putin's eyes. The process, in my opinion, began with a change in policy regarding the Nord Stream 2 project. Biden himself proposed to Russia to hold a summit, which also looked like a justification for Russia’s aggressiveness. And I will add that Biden’s sincere and obvious idealism, widely demonstrated during and after the summit, did not earn Putin’s respect. It should be added that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan made a very bad impression on Russia, as well as on China. So, from here came an even more menacing deployment of troops, a summit, and now written ultimatums from the Russian Foreign Ministry,” the expert said.
“It seems that some in the administration in Washington believe that by agreeing to discuss these Russian terms, by showing our flexibility, Russia will then calm down and become more conciliatory. This is the logic in Washington. However, in Moscow this flexibility will be perceived quite differently. First, it will demonstrate that the West is ready to discuss European security on Russia's terms, something we have so far refused to do. By doing so, we will show Moscow that, whatever our real intentions, we consider their claims legitimate because we agree to discuss them,” Scherr said.
