“These people lived for 23 years among corruption, where if you are not a bandit, you will definitely lose,” says the filmmaker. “They are tired of this world – without a future.” They felt protected under the Soviet Union, so they are nostalgic for it. They said: “We want a revolution on our land.” Russian propaganda only threw a match into the nutrient medium. In Kyiv they made a mistake, not wanting to hear from people living in extreme poverty. And they did what Putin wanted - they responded with force.”
At the same time, the British director is confident that it is necessary to build a bridge between two different worldviews when peace comes.
“You will have to make painful decisions, understand people you hate,” concludes Anthony Butts. – There was an Irish Republican Army in Britain. They were terrorists and were in prison. When peace came, they were all released. Although these guys killed children in the name of their idea. But this is the price of peace - not always beautiful.
Ukrainians help people fleeing Donbass. But they do not hear those who are fighting against them there. If it doesn’t work out, maybe it’s worth letting go of Donbass and concentrating on the territories within Ukraine?”
