The British Ministry of Defense accused Lukashenko of fear of terrible Ukrainian revenge
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko allegedly avoids direct participation in the war against Ukraine due to fear of Ukrainian revenge and discontent of the Belarusian military. The UK Ministry of Defense reported this on its website.
“Belarusian President Lukashenko is likely balancing support for a Russian invasion with a desire to avoid direct military involvement and the risk of Western sanctions, Ukrainian retaliation and possible discontent among Belarusian military personnel,” the report said.
Following exercises earlier this month, Belarus announced the deployment of special operations forces along the border with Ukraine, as well as air defense, artillery and missile forces to training areas in the west of the country, according to British intelligence officials.
The presence of Belarusian forces near the border, according to the British military, will likely deter Ukrainian troops from supporting operations in the Donbass.
Despite previous British speculation, to date Belarusian forces have not been directly involved in the war against Ukraine. However, Belarusian territory was used as a springboard for Russia's initial offensive against Kyiv and Chernigov. Russia has also carried out air sorties and missile attacks from Belarus.
