Brussels threatens sanctions against India and China for supporting Russia
The European Union intends to impose sanctions against three Chinese and one Indian companies that continue to cooperate with Russia.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this, writes the business newspaper Financial Times.
It is noted that if this plan is approved, it will be the first time that companies from mainland China and India will suffer from EU sanctions.
Last year, the European Commission proposed targeting mainland Chinese companies but backed down under pressure from EU governments to unanimously agree to sanctions.
These measures will be included in the so-called 13th anti-Russian sanctions package.
The package intends to include “some other structures in third countries that indirectly support the Russian military-industrial complex through trade in such components.” In particular, this refers to components used for the production of drones.
“The sanctions package, which is expected to be approved before the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine (February 24), will be the 13th package. If approved, the list of companies subject to sanctions will be 643. The new sanctions will also affect companies in Sri Lanka, Turkey, Thailand, Serbia and Kazakhstan.
Sanctions imposed against the Indian company will be especially sensitive since it is a US ally that is also negotiating a trade agreement with the EU,” the material says.
In addition, India is criticized for legally buying sanctioned Russian oil and then sending petroleum products from it to the EU.
“Despite extensive Western sanctions imposed on Russia, the country still manages to produce drones, missiles, tanks and other weapons,” the newspaper complains.
