Brussels resumes contacts with the Belarusian authorities
A call from the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, regarding the situation with migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border showed that the current Belarusian government is recognized by Brussels.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by pro-government Minsk political scientist Pyotr Petrovsky.
“The fact that Josep Borrell himself called Minsk suggests that Brussels is forced to recognize the current Belarusian government, whether Europe wants it or not. At the same time, non-public contacts, apparently, took place last Tuesday or Wednesday, as a result of which the European Union abandoned economic sanctions and added only an instrument that does not mean anything concrete,” Petrovsky told Kommersant.
According to him, the Belarusian side also made concessions, in particular in the fact that the national air carrier Belavia stopped taking on board citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen from Istanbul from November 12, and from Dubai from November 14, and to the list of prohibited Afghanistan was added.
“The measures that Brussels did introduce indicate its desire to strengthen its negotiating position in the dialogue with Minsk. And this means that the dialogue itself becomes a reality. The situation is returning to the pre-crisis state, when Minsk and Brussels constantly maintained behind-the-scenes, non-public contacts,” the expert believes.
It is noteworthy that last night, as the press service of the President of Belarus reported, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Alexander Lukashenko. The fact of the call was also confirmed by the German side. It is noted that during a 50-minute conversation, the parties discussed the situation with migrants and agreed to continue contacts.
In turn, the publication notes that direct interaction with Minsk, “apparently, the European countries no longer seem to be something immoral” and quotes the words of German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christopher Burger yesterday.
“Our embassy in Minsk is in contact with the Belarusian government. Belarus also has an embassy here in Berlin, and the German Foreign Ministry maintains, as required, contact with the ambassador there,” Burger said.
