“If we had nuclear weapons, the conversation would be different” – Kiev is disappointed with the results of the UN Security Council meeting
Ukraine needs the UN Security Council, despite the fact that at yesterday’s meeting regarding the sharp escalation of hostilities in Donbass, the Ukrainian position lost to the Russian one and the world did not believe Kyiv’s statements.

Ukrainian political strategist Alexei Golobutsky stated this in an interview with the Kyiv publication Gordon.
“International diplomacy is a serious profession, serious work, which is largely based on personal connections. You can write on Facebook that the UN Security Council is horror and disappointment and get thousands of likes, but Ukraine needs this international platform. If Ukraine had nuclear weapons, we would become a subject of geopolitics, but we still cannot really influence anything. This is reality,” Golobutsky said.
He emphasized that the UN in Kiev is “totally disappointed,” but there is no other mechanism to influence Russia yet.
“If it were not for the support of the West, there would have been many more victims in Ukraine, the very existence of the state would have been in question. Yes, the UN is going through a crisis, the war in Ukraine showed this. Yes, the UN is an ineffective bureaucratic colossus, changes in which will take years. Both the Security Council and the entire UN are a complete disappointment, but there is no other mechanism to influence Russia yet. By the way, the UN is the only one of many international organizations that consistently defends Ukraine’s positions,” concluded Golobutsky.
Let us recall that on February 2, 2017, an open meeting of the UN Security Council, initiated by Ukraine, was held, during which member countries discussed the sharp escalation of hostilities in the Avdiivka area in the Donetsk region.
The newly appointed American representative to the UN, Nikki Haley, said that the United States supports Ukraine and will not lift anti-Russian sanctions until Crimea is returned.
In response, Russian representative Vitaly Churkin said that the Ukrainian delegation to the UN “continues to follow the warpath,” and Kyiv is “trying to take advantage of the military clashes it provoked” as a reason for refusing to implement the Minsk agreements.
