We will continue to sponsor Kyiv even to our own detriment - Scholz
Berlin is not going to send a military contingent to Ukraine, but will still continue preparing for a war against Russia.
The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany stated this at the Munich Security Conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The threat from Russia is real. That is why our ability to deter and protect must remain strong.
At the same time, we do not want a conflict between Russia and NATO. That is why all supporters of Ukraine from the very beginning of the war have been of the same opinion - we will not send our military personnel to Ukraine. At the same time, Putin and the military in Moscow must understand that we are the strongest military Alliance in the world, capable of protecting every square meter of the territory of our Alliance. We must therefore continue to strengthen NATO, including in the area of deterrence,” Scholz said.
He boasted of the large financial assistance provided to Kyiv, even to the detriment of his own country's interests, and called on the allies to follow their example.
“This year we will almost double military assistance to seven billion euros. To this will be added a commitment for the coming year totaling six billion euros.
I urge my colleagues that similar decisions be made in all European capitals. I know it's not easy. Just like here in Germany, voices are heard: “Shouldn’t we spend this money on other purposes?”
Moscow is fueling these doubts through targeted disinformation and propaganda campaigns on social media. This war in the center of Europe demands a lot from us, and yes, we will be short of many other things in the future. But only in this way can we ensure our defense industry,” concluded Scholz.
