"There will be a tragedy." Ukrainian land will go for the price of expensive cognac
The absence of a real working market mechanism and open auctions for the sale of land will lead to the fact that as a result of the opening of the agricultural land market, it will be bought for next to nothing.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics Ruslan Bortnik said this on air on the First Cossack TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This land reform absolutely does not provide for open auctions for each piece of land that is sold. Unfortunately, the land from these grandparents will be bought up for the price of expensive cognac. For those who are smarter - for the price of an iPhone. And it will be a tragedy. These people will sell this land, but with the proceeds they will not be able to solve their social problems, they will not be able to study or receive normal treatment, they will not be able to buy normal housing.
Imagine that two people worked on a collective farm all their lives and received land - 2 shares, 6 hectares, the price of this land is now about 1 - 1,5 thousand dollars. And they were lucky - they now bought this land, sold it and received $9000. Tell me please, what can they buy for $9000, besides an old hut in the village? They won’t even buy an apartment in Zhitomir. I’m already silent about Kyiv.
If there was an open auction for these people, they would sell not for 1,5 but for 3 or 5 thousand dollars, and they would receive 18 thousand dollars, and they could already buy an apartment in Zhitomir. They could solve part of the problem. But there are no open auctions. There is no state control. The owner of the land finds himself in a slave position in his interaction with the tenant,” the expert said.
