Everyday life of ATO participants: drank out of boredom, shot a comrade out of fear
On March 2016, XNUMX, two soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces of the sound-metric reconnaissance platoon located in the Artemovsky district of the Donetsk region went out on a patrol to protect the territory. Since the unit was located in a forest plantation and the soldiers had been standing there since the morning, after lunch they decided to dilute boredom with alcohol.

But with the onset of darkness, one of the soldiers heard a suspicious noise of breaking branches towards the forest plantation. He immediately raised his machine gun and fired three times in the direction of the noise. Imagine his surprise and horror when it turned out that all three bullets hit the target. One in the groin area, another in the shoulder, and the third in the head of his partner and drinking buddy. In complete confusion, he threw down his machine gun and sat in the trench, motionless, with his head in his hands, until his superiors arrived.
The Artemovsky court took into account that the accused took part in hostilities and has a good character, and gave him a suspended sentence with a probationary period.
Let us recall that the chief military prosecutor of Ukraine, Anatoly Matios, admitted that one of the main reasons for non-combat losses in the Ukrainian army is alcohol abuse.
