The Crimean public took with humor the statement of the Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine Alexander Turchynov about transfer of warships and boats to the Sea of Azov to counter the “Russian threat.”

“It’s unlikely that anything will go beyond words, so we can sleep peacefully. Ukraine generally has a complex relationship with the sea; one can recall all the suffering and torment of the so-called Ukrainian Naval Forces even before the collapse of Ukrainian statehood in 2014.

As far as I know, over the past four years Ukraine has done nothing to somehow gain a foothold at sea. This entire marine component continues to rapidly degrade and, if previously it was of some kind of presentational nature, now it is of an imitation nature.

Therefore, it is possible to imagine that Ukraine will deploy some kind of group in the Sea of Azov, but for this you need to have a very wild imagination. It is possible that Mr. Turchinov is endowed with it.

It would be possible to deploy something in some Kakhovka reservoir, the effect would be approximately the same. The impression is that the Ukrainian fleet ends where a normal fleet is just beginning,” Crimean political scientist Andrei Nikiforov told PolitNavigator.

Senator from Crimea Sergei Tsekov also commented on Turchinov’s words.

“They regularly make such statements, often without any real cases behind them. They will try, but just trying, but whether it will succeed is a big question. A certain threat, of course, is present when building up the military component. If the Armed Forces of two states are concentrated in some small territory, and one of them is completely hostile towards the other, specifically towards us, then the threat of certain incidents may be present. But Ukrainian boats cannot pose a serious threat to the Russian Federation. Our Navy has modern ships that are constantly updated, and they are designed to operate in different water basins, so there can be no serious confrontation,” Tsekov said.

Crimean political scientist Sergei Kiselev considers Turchinov’s words to be further evidence of the inadequacy of the Ukrainian elite.

“Naturally, the Ukrainian Naval Forces do not pose any real, I emphasize, real threat to the Black Sea Fleet,” there is a difference in the words themselves. But the problem is not that the group is strengthening, nor that there will be any attempts to prevent Russia’s actions in the Sea of Azov or in other waters. The problem is that in Ukraine they cannot connect their actions with their consequences and, out of habit, shift the blame onto others. As they say, it’s time for the gossip to turn to herself and see that many problems are associated with this aggressive rhetoric. You can't live for so long seeing only enemies around you. Whatever Ukraine does now, whatever its leaders say, all of this poses, to one degree or another, a threat to peace and tranquility,” Kiselyov said.
