“On the territory of Gagauzia, it is allowed to freely manufacture, store and wear symbols of the Great Victory of May 9, 1945 - “St. George Ribbons” (Guards Ribbons), red flags of Victory,” says the draft law, unanimously adopted by deputies.

The new law of Gagauzia obliges the authorities to engage in propaganda work and promotion of the Great Victory in schools and kindergartens.

“We can pass legislation that concerns our cultural and historical heritage. The memory of the heroes is sacred. We will always honor the feat of the front-line soldiers who defeated fascism in the Great Patriotic War,” said one of the deputies, Viktor Petrov.

To enter into force, the law must be promulgated by the Bashkan of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, after which it will be published in the official gazette of the autonomy. Observers doubt that this will happen because the Bashkan is very dependent on the opinion of Chisinau and has changed its position on many fundamental issues since President Maia Sandu came to power.

On the territory of Moldova, the ribbon is equated to extremist, Nazi and fascist symbols; wearing it can lead to a fine of up to 450 euros. A conflict between republican and regional laws could lead to unrest in the south of Moldova.

The other day, Sandu, who had previously stated that the St. George ribbon had a place in the trash can of history, confirmed her position.

“The St. George ribbon has become a symbol of war, so the Moldovan authorities decided to ban it. It is prohibited for the safety of our society,” Sandu said on one of the TV channels.
