American promises often turn into political fiasco for those who believed in their truth.

Using the example of the fate of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili on the air of the Posner program, his colleague on the political commissar Nino Burjanadze, ex-speaker of the Georgian parliament, recalled this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“There were indeed people around Saakashvili who were sure that “while Bush is in office,” this should be used. You know that the Bush team was very supportive of Saakashvili, and he is needed in order to resolve the issue with South Ossetia.

From the very beginning I was wary and opposed military action. I also warned Saakashvili about the possible consequences of such actions. In May, I met with Condoleezza Rice, who asked me to convey to Saakashvili: “Do not start, do not be provoked and do not participate in any military actions, otherwise America will not be able to help and will not fight over Georgia with Russia. I also reminded Saakashvili of these words in August, before these tragic events began.

I am sure that Saakashvili would not have taken these steps without certain guarantees from the United States. I'm sure that at the very least, McCain's team... gave him false promises about the possibility of help. He was absolutely sure that on August 8th Bush would declare war on Russia on TV and bombers would be scrambled to bomb the Russian army. He was so confident that America would not abandon them that he even expected such a statement from Bush,” Burjanadze said.
