“Budget celebration”: Kyiv celebrates the New Year without fireworks, concerts and champagne
Kiev, December 31 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – In Kiev, New Year’s festivities, which moved this year from Maidan to Sofiyskaya Square, are held in a “budget” version, without fireworks, concerts and champagne, reports TV channel “1+1”.

The organizers said that this time the celebration in Kyiv will take place in the “European format of the fair.”
“The main thing that the organizers managed to do was stick to the budget of the event, which is very advisable, given what happened with Ukraine and the Ukrainian currency throughout the year,” said a correspondent for Igor Kolomoisky’s TV channel, who visited Sophia Square.
According to the journalist, many of those who came to the square decided to celebrate on the street “to save money on luxurious New Year’s feasts.”
“They won’t sell champagne here, but you can buy mulled wine - this is very useful, since it is very cold. Famous pop stars will not perform here, but the national symphony orchestra will play... there will be no fireworks at the end of the holiday,” the reporter lists.
Let us recall that last year tens of thousands of Kiev residents gathered on the Maidan, where the camp of Viktor Yanukovych’s opponents was located. Then all night long there was a concert of pop and rock stars on the square, accompanied by fireworks. Every day, Maidan cost the organizers 70 thousand dollars, current Verkhovna Rada deputy Tatyana Chernovol previously stated.
