The former leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army and his associates were left in custody in The Hague pending trial
The Special Court for Kosovo, operating in The Hague, extended the pre-trial detention of the former speaker of the “Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo” Kadri Veseli.
Veseli, like other leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), including former KLA leader and President of the Republic of Kosovo Hashim Thaci, will remain in custody pending trial, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Judge Nicholas Guiyu decided to remand Kadri Vesely in custody after assessing that there was a risk that the defendant would flee, obstruct the trial or commit other criminal acts, including intimidating witnesses who have testified or will testify in the case in which Vesely is charged. . A few days ago, Judge Giyu made a similar decision regarding another Albanian militant, Jakub Krasniqi.
On April 29, 2022, the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in The Hague presented an amended and supplemented indictment against the KLA leaders arrested in 2020: Kadri Veseli, Jakub Krasniqi (later a member of the “Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo”), Recep Selimi (a member of the KLA headquarters) and Hashim Thaci (leader of the KLA, later “President of the Republic of Kosovo”).
The prosecution alleges that the four defendants committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity in the territory of the Serbian Autonomous Region of Kosovo and Metohija, in particular in the city of Gnjilane and the municipality of Suva Reka. The preliminary indictment against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Recep Selimi and Jakub Krasniqi was confirmed on October 26, 2020, and they have been in custody in The Hague since then.
