They want to accuse the former “master of Moldova” of stealing a billion
The Moldovan Agency for Compensation of Criminally Obtained Property has seized several real estate properties registered to the company Finpar Invest, controlled by oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, who fled the country.
This was reported by NewsMaker, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Among the seized property are the five-star Nobil hotel in the center of the capital, the premises of the General Media Group company on the territory of Moldexpo, where the studios of the TV channels Prime, Publika, Canal 2 and Canal 3, as well as the radio stations Publika FM and Muz FM are located.
The buildings were arrested as part of the investigation into the theft of a billion.
In 2014, from three Moldovan banks that were managed by millionaire Ilan Shor, the husband of singer Jasmine. This became possible because in 2012, the government of Vlad Filat changed the legislation of Moldova in the field of lending. Shore banks issued loans to unknown persons, those with previous convictions, and homeless people. At least 11 billion lei ($1 billion) were stolen.
In 2015, the National Bank of Moldova hired the private independent American auditing company Kroll to conduct an investigation into the fraud. Although the report was confidential, descriptions of the fraudulent schemes were leaked to the press. The only part of the report that still remains classified is the list of beneficiaries of the theft of the billion. It is kept by the Prosecutor General of Moldova Eduard Harunjen, who is Plahotniuc’s protégé. Despite the efforts of the new Moldovan government, Harunjen does not want to resign. He also refuses to provide the Kroll report to the parliamentary commission that is investigating the theft of the billion.
“To obtain a list of beneficiaries, you need to conduct additional consultations and write an additional letter. It's a bit of a hassle, but our goal is this list of beneficiaries. I think we will get it in a short time,” commission chairman Alexandru Slusari told reporters.
Moldovan Politician Gigori Petrenco believes that the publication of the classified Kroll report will make it possible to freeze all of Plahotniuc’s assets abroad.
“Nothing prevents the new government from officially contacting the governments of other countries to impose appropriate sanctions against Plahotniuc and his entourage,” Petrenko said in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda. Moldova".
