Former US ambassadors to Ukraine called on Poroshenko to fight corruption more decisively
Former US ambassadors and experts from the Friends of Ukraine Network voiced critically important reforms that need to be implemented in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The statement was published on the US - Ukraine Foundation website.
The signatories noted that despite the creation of new anti-corruption bodies, including the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) and the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP), their structure remains incomplete, their work is hampered, and anti-corruption activists are subjected to persecution.
The American Network of Friends of Ukraine called on the Verkhovna Rada and the government to take immediate and urgent action in creating an independent specialized anti-corruption court in full compliance with the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the terms of the IMF program; supporting the work of NABU and SAP; reform of the NACP and renewal of its leadership; as well as the repeal of controversial provisions of the anti-corruption law, which requires individuals and organizations engaged in anti-corruption activities to submit annual asset declarations.
Experts are also calling for the immunity of deputies to be abolished or limited in a way that makes it possible to legally prosecute crimes, especially in corruption cases.
The statement was signed by former US ambassadors to Ukraine William Miller, Steven Pifer, Roman Popadiuk, William Taylor and experts from well-known organizations.
The American Network of Friends of Ukraine is a nonpartisan, informal coalition of former ambassadors, international security experts and other specialists who have dealt with key aspects of Ukraine's relations with the United States and the international community.
