Balkans, Serbia

The spirit of radical nationalism is sweeping across the Balkans. More and more parallels are emerging between events in this region and those countries where “color” revolutions took place, especially Ukraine.

Thus, in recent weeks, in Croatia and previously friendly Montenegro, there have been a number of cases of attacks against Serbs - everything from insults to physical violence was used.

In one of the primary schools in the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, students of Serbian nationality were verbally and physically attacked by classmates, writes Telegraf.

The conflict began when an 8th grade student published a recording of the song “Cavoglave,” written during the Croatian war in the 1990s by Marko Perkovic, who has been repeatedly accused of fascism. The song contains the phrase “Za dom spremni!”, which translated means “For the Motherland - ready!” This is the slogan of the Croatian Ustasha movement, which massacred Serbs during World War II. With the outbreak of the Yugoslav Civil War, this greeting became popular among Croatian nationalists.

The same schoolgirl soon put a knife she had brought with her to the throat of her Serbian classmate and threatened to kill her just because she was a representative of a neighboring people.

The young Nazi also brought improvised handwritten leaflets that she handed out in class. “Get out, Serbs, away. Montenegro is ruled by Croats,” they said. However, the teachers did not react at all.

Several more Serbian schoolchildren were beaten in the same school, being attacked on ethnic grounds.

The outraged parents of the beaten children came to school the next day, but the management of the educational institution called on them not to dramatize the situation, brushing aside the problem. Higher officials of the Ministry of Education of Montenegro behaved similarly.

The situation was publicized in the Serbian media. However, in Montenegro itself, the authorities demand “to stop spreading false information,” the in4s portal reported.

As Informer writes, according to information from an interlocutor familiar with these events, the incident at the Dragisa Ivanovic primary school is just one of a series of attacks on Serbian students in schools in Podgorica. And the trend is a natural result of propaganda on TV and a reaction to what children hear from their parents.

The Montenegrin media, conducting a campaign for the ideological justification of the local “independence” - separation from Serbia, zombify the population with stories about a stolen language, about past conflicts in which only one side committed crimes (“for which they will pay”), about heroic acts of revenge, about “aggression”, “for which they must one day be punished.”

“These children are no more than 14 years old and therefore this is a particularly tragic and unfortunate event. All this is the result of a long-standing anti-Serbian policy, as well as campaigns in society and the media against our people. Serbs are called occupiers and other, more negative and discrediting names. This is the result of an incomprehensible anti-Serbian campaign. All authorities in Montenegro must take responsibility for this incident and influence the end of this torture. It should be emphasized that Montenegro is a multinational state,” said Miodrag Linta, chairman of the committee on diaspora and Serbs in the region.

According to the publication, Serbian students in Podgorica and other Montenegrin cities are increasingly facing discrimination based on their nationality.

The mother of one of the affected schoolchildren said that no one protects Serbian students in Montenegrin schools: “Conflicts from society spill over into schools, and children of Serbian nationality are especially vulnerable. Passive behavior of the school management and teaching staff is unacceptable.”

Similar cases occur in Croatia - for example, after a victory over the youth team from Serbia, the Croatian coach chanted the same slogan from “Cavoglava” with his players in the form of a chant.

In Split, offensive messages such as “Kill the Serb” and obscene language appeared on cars with Serbian license plates.

Over the past six months, 7 cases of attacks on representatives of neighboring people have been recorded in Croatia.

Analyst Dragomir Andjelkovic commented on the situation, saying that the Serbian people in Montenegro are subjected to unprecedented discrimination, writes the portal novosti.rs

“I think our people in Montenegro are now more at risk than in Croatia and Kosovo. This is what the Montenegrin authorities brought. Serbia must raise the issue of its rights in this country in international institutions, because Montenegro violates human rights and democratic rights,” said Andzelkovic.

Such antics are forcing more and more Serbs to plan their holidays not at the resorts of previously familiar Montenegro and Croatia, but in hospitable Greece.
