“A year has passed since Crimea joined Russia. Western countries did not accept this and imposed sanctions on Russia. I want to convey to the wider Japanese public the truth about the peaceful conduct of the referendum. I learned that the referendum was held in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine. It took place peacefully and was the will of the Crimeans. But the events that took place in Crimea are not reliably reported in the Japanese media,” Hatoyama said.
On Wednesday, during a trip to the South Coast, the ex-prime minister visited the Livadia and Vorontsov palaces, where he got acquainted with the exhibition dedicated to the Yalta Conference of 1945 and supported the idea of creating a friendship society between Crimea and Japan.
In Yalta, Yukio Hatoyama declared his readiness to promote the development of cultural and humanitarian ties between Crimea and Japan, which could subsequently create conditions for resolving political differences.
