As reported in local media, a criminal case was initiated under Article 441 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - “ecocide”.
The SBU confirmed that a criminal case had been initiated.
According to the SBU, they were approached by a former resident of Krivoy Rog, Vladimir Zelensky, who was elected president of Ukraine. He criticized ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih for failing to fulfill its obligations to improve the environmental situation in the region on time and called for targeted financial support for those people who suffered due to harmful emissions into the atmosphere. At the same time, he recalled that back in 2016-2017, the enterprise, in particular, had to decommission the open-hearth shop and stop the two-tub steelmaking unit.
In turn, the deputy general director of the enterprise, Alexander Ivanov, said that in 13 years after the change of owner, the enterprise reduced emissions into the atmosphere by 48%: from 403 thousand tons to 208 thousand tons, discharges of storm water and wastewater were reduced by 80%. About $4,4 billion was invested in production. During this period, units that did not comply with Ukrainian and international standards were decommissioned, and units that met such standards were put into operation.
ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog is the largest producer of rolled steel in Ukraine. Specializes in the production of long products, in particular, rebar and wire rod.
Mittal Steel Corporation acquired 93,02% of the shares of OJSC Kryvorizhstal at an open tender on October 24, 2005 for 24,2 billion UAH at a starting price of 10 billion UAH, after which the steel plant was renamed Mittal Steel Krivoy Rog, and later to ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog. The ultimate owner is Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal.
