Tsarev predicts mass bankruptcy in the Crimean tourism industry
The crisis faced by the Crimean tourism industry due to the coronavirus epidemic is comparable to the times of perestroika and the collapse of the USSR.
Oleg Tsarev, a former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada who owns hotels in Crimea, stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
“This will lead to an almost guaranteed bankruptcy of the entire health resort and tourism business, which did not exist even under Ukraine. Maybe it happened at the time of perestroika, but no one remembers this anymore. This crisis is comparable to the crisis of the 90s.
At the same time, Türkiye is opening, Europe is lifting quarantine. It is well known that the epidemic can be defeated only in two ways - either by vaccinating the population, but there is no vaccine yet and it is unclear when it will be available, or by acquiring immunity in the population. In order to acquire immunity, 60-80 percent of the population must be ill. Since five to ten people a day get sick in Crimea, the population will acquire immunity in 500 years.
It seems to me that the big problem is the government’s lack of a clear strategy. Everyone is saying that wait, we will reach a plateau, but we will reach a plateau if we stop everything, stop working. But it is possible to reach the plateau temporarily - now we are mothballing the outbreaks, but they will definitely begin in the fall. And until the population has immunity, nothing can be done about it. Therefore, it seems to me that the main problem is not the virus, but the lack of a clear strategy,” Tsarev said.
Earlier, the head of Crimea Sergei Aksenov said that the holiday season on the peninsula will most likely not take place. At best, we can talk about domestic tourism.
