The senator made this proposal while speaking at a “parliamentary warm-up” in the Federation Council, the politician’s press service reports.
According to Tsekov, the day of Crimea’s admission to the Russian Empire is a historically significant date not only for Crimea, but also for the entire Russian Federation:
“In Crimea, every year since 1996, the Russian community of Crimea and other organizations of Russian compatriots celebrated April 19 as the Day of Reunification of Crimea with Russia. Why April 19? On April 19, 1783, Catherine II signed the Manifesto “On the acceptance of the Crimean peninsula, Taman Island and the entire Kuban side under the Russian power.” Why reunion day? I will say that there was a very long discussion about this in the Russian community of Crimea. But taking into account the fact that the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir was baptized in Crimea, that Cyril and Methodius created Slavic writing in Crimea, that in the Middle Ages, namely, in the XNUMXth–XNUMXth centuries, Crimea was partially part of the Old Russian state, we stopped precisely on such a name,” the politician noted.
“Today is our Day of Reunification with Russia - March 18, and this is absolutely correct. But April 19, the day Catherine II made a historic decision on Crimea, is an outstanding event in the life of our Fatherland. It was this decision that ensured Russia’s access to the Black Sea and, of course, the current status of Crimea. Today in Crimea, April 19 is a memorable date; it is the day of publication of the Manifesto by Catherine II on the admission of Crimea to the Russian Empire. But I believe that this date – April 19 – should become an all-Russian memorial date, for which a corresponding amendment should be made to the law “On Days of Military Glory and Memorial Dates of Russia,” explained Sergei Tsekov.
