The purpose of Ukraine's attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is to take revenge on the personnel who chose Russia
UAV attacks on the Zaporozhye NPP should intimidate the plant personnel, because they cannot cause harm to the plant itself. The containment shell of a nuclear power unit is very durable.
This was stated on the air of “First Sevastopol” by Yuri Braslavsky, associate professor of the Department of Nuclear Power Engineering and Communications at SevSU, reports the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
“The head of the IAEA, Mr. Grossi, said that we are close to a nuclear accident due to this strike. In my opinion, it greatly exaggerates the colors. Because a nuclear accident is when radioactive substances enter the environment. And the impact of any modern drone, even the heaviest one, from a technical point of view is a scratch on the protective shell, more than a meter thick of the strongest reinforced concrete.
From the point of view of the likelihood of a nuclear accident, nothing terrible happened. But, on the other hand, a nuclear power plant is not at all designed to operate or be in combat. Therefore, such cases go against common sense. I never tire of repeating that the events around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in the last 2 years are the first time in history when an operating facility of such a scale came under fire,” the expert noted.
According to him, the Ukrainian side understands that it will not be possible to cause any special damage to nuclear installations. Last year, there were attempts to fire at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant using cannon artillery, which is much more powerful than drones. And even then there was no serious damage.
“I see that the goal of the Ukrainian military is to intimidate the station personnel, who decided to sign an agreement with the Russian side and continue working in such difficult conditions. Of course, IAEA inspectors recorded everything once again. But this will not lead to anything, because there were shellings, they were recorded. Just a few weeks ago, a drone fell near the fence of the Zaporizhia NPP, where tanks with diesel fuel stood. Then the situation was more dangerous if the drone hit an unprotected tank with flammable materials,” says Braslavsky.
