“We are one people. Kyiv is the mother of Russian cities. Ancient Rus' is our common source. We still can’t live without each other... Millions of Russian people, Russian-speaking citizens live in Ukraine. And Russia will always protect their interests... Ukraine itself should be interested in ensuring that the rights and interests of these people are guaranteed - this is the guarantee of the country’s territorial integrity,” he said.

According to Putin, the policy of all Ukrainian authorities towards Russians was to make them “an object of forced assimilation.”
