The price of refusal to integrate for Lukashenko is the crisis and the Belarusian Maidan
It is still unclear whether the signing of “road maps” for the integration of Belarus and Russia will take place. Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets stated this on Sputnik radio, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Perhaps Lukashenko will sign the road maps, but will not implement them. If he does not sign them, Russia will choose a different tactic in working with Lukashenko. This will mean that the residents of Belarus will need to greatly tighten their belts,” predicts Bolkunets.
He believes that in this case the West will try to “play its card” in the upcoming presidential elections.
“There are attempts by individual Western functionaries to play the anti-Russian card. In the near future, even in December, protests like a color revolution are possible in Minsk, although they are not realistic in Belarus,” Bolkunets concluded.
In turn, MGIMO Associate Professor Kirill Koktysh said on Baltcom radio that Lukashenko understands perfectly well that the West will not be able to compensate Belarus for economic losses from the severance of ties with Russia.
“Belarus will not change its geopolitical orientation without catastrophic economic consequences. Therefore, it sets the limits of possible fluctuation.
Flirting is possible, moreover, it is encouraged. But nothing more serious will happen, because the West does not have the resources to compensate for real losses. And Alexander Grigorievich will demand compensation and lost benefits. The West doesn’t have the money for this,” Koktysh concluded.
