A quarter of a century has passed since the break with Soviet influence in Central Europe, Maciej Nowicki, a columnist for the Polish Newsweek, is confident that the countries of the region are, of their own free will, inclined towards close friendship with Russia.

For example, Czech President Milos Zeman appeared as the chief guest at the suspicious, in the opinion of the Pole, “Dialogue of Civilizations” conference on the island of Rhodes, which called for the immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on Russia. Moreover, Zeman compared the war in Ukraine to a flu epidemic that needs to be stopped.

Milos Zeman recognizes the benefits of cooperation between the Czech Republic and Russia in the field of medium and large businesses, tries to agree on the construction of a nuclear power plant by Russia in Temelin, accuses Kyiv of starting a war in Ukraine and even denies the presence of Russian troops in the Donbass. And in general, the Polish Newsweek complains, the President of the Czech Republic even went to the Russian embassy on May 9th, recited poems about Russian children, and even drank vodka there.

“In general, I spent the day like a real communist leader!” – journalists are sure.

Political scientist Jiri Pehe suspects that Zeman is continuing the policy of former Czech President Vaclav Klaus, which was close to Moscow’s line. After all, both of them, according to the Polish political scientist, were financed by Lukoil and even... the Russian mafia.

The situation is similar in Hungary and Slovakia, where Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, like Viktor Orban, opposes anti-Russian sanctions.

During Soviet times, an important pipeline was built in Slovakia, which was supposed to connect gas fields in Siberia with the countries of Western Europe. With its help, it was possible to organize gas reverse when Ukraine demanded it, but Slovakia, citing legal and technical reasons, almost completely stopped reverse supplies to Ukraine. This, according to the Polish publication, is another evidence of Putin’s influence on Central Europe.
