“We will not tolerate censorship” - Russian senators took Google seriously
Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov supported Roskomnadzor, which recently forced Google to restore access to blocked materials from the Ukraina.ru website about the causes of the death of the Boeing MH-17.
He stated this today at a meeting of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The most wrong thing in this situation would be to say that we have no leverage. There are levers, there is the possibility of putting forward demands, warnings, fines. Google was just fined $28,5 million in Turkey.
The US Congress is reacting to the fact that they are engaged in censorship. They have already called the heads of Facebook and Twitter. When these resources operate on the territory of the Russian Federation, they must obey our laws and regulations,” Pushkov said.
He called for a legislative response to cases of Internet censorship and the development of domestic platforms.
“This is a factor of our soft power,” Pushkov added.
He was supported by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko.
“It is unacceptable when foreign platforms and companies behave this way on the territory of the Russian Federation, when there is simply obvious political censorship. Not the removal, as we demand, of dubious sites, porn sites, drug sites, but simply prohibiting access to the Russian media... That's freedom of speech, democracy!
We should not allow ourselves to behave this way on the territory of the Russian Federation. There is no need to go over it, but there is legislation, strict control and requirements are needed to comply with legislation on the territory of the Russian Federation,” Matvienko said.
