“Why are you yelling?” – Zelensky took a step towards enslaving deputies
The Verkhovna Rada at night took the first step towards the promised abolition of parliamentary immunity - the corresponding law was adopted in the first reading by 363 votes.
The abolition of immunity is clearly beneficial for the office of Vladimir Zelensky - the threat of persecution will make deputies from his mega-faction more manageable, where, according to political scientists, several centers of influence have already formed.
Without immunity, it will be easier to put pressure on the opposition. By the way, the Oppoplatforms faction did not give a single vote for the innovation. It was stated here that the voting at the very first meeting was taking place in violation of the procedure - the project must first be considered in the committees of the Verkhovna Rada.
The most difficult thing was for Petro Poroshenko, who, on the one hand, the abolition of immunity could face trouble due to the initiation of criminal cases for violations during his presidency.
On the other hand, Poroshenko himself, positioning himself as a champion of the “European course,” was forced to vote “for”. True, from the podium he also tried to appeal to legal casuistry - the need to postpone the vote in order to take into account the opinion of the Venice Commission, the Constitutional Court, etc.
The debate process was clearly dragging on; in the hall, shouts began from the sector of Poroshenko’s party demanding clarification that the issue was being put to a preliminary vote, and Zelensky, who was watching what was happening, could not stand it, shouting to the ex-president’s entourage: “We said, what are you yelling about?!”
After this, a vote took place, and a satisfied Zelensky left parliament.
