This opinion was expressed by the vice-president of the Center for Political Technologies, Alexei Makarkin, in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“In relations with Russia, the renaming of the ATO will change little, since the Minsk agreements are already at a complete impasse. However, Ukraine is making efforts to isolate itself from Moscow in all possible areas – from ideological to transport. In particular, the abandonment of the ATO may help to introduce visas with Russia.
The Kremlin, I think, will not escalate the situation, including recognizing the DPR and LPR under the pretext of Kyiv’s withdrawal from the Minsk agreements. This would be too big an international scandal, and the Russian authorities today, on the contrary, are trying to establish contact with the West. Despite this, they may well take some steps similar to the recent recognition of passports of the self-proclaimed republics,” Makarkin believes.
