On January 14, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights will issue a verdict on the admissibility of Ukraine’s claims against Russia in the framework of accusations of “human rights violations” on the peninsula.

Ukraine accuses Russia of violating a number of articles of the Human Rights Convention – “inhuman treatment and torture”, “respect for private life”, “freedom of expression”, “prohibition of discrimination”, “freedom of assembly”, “freedom of movement”, etc. .

By the way, all the items on this list could easily be put forward as complaints against Kyiv itself - however, neither the Ukrainian opponents of the coup nor the Russian structures did this.

Ukrainian claims were filed on March 13, 2014 and August 26, 2015, and in 2018 they were combined into one common case.

According to the former representative of the “President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea” Boris Babin, the decision of the ECHR will be key for the court’s consideration of many claims filed against Russia.

“For those unlawful acts where the ECHR recognizes the administrative practice of the Russian Federation as a violation of human rights, then winning the case is almost guaranteed. And for those where the practice is not recognized, the application will be rejected as unacceptable... January 14 is definitely becoming a key day... The ECHR press release states that there are now seven thousand individual applications about the events in Crimea, the East of Ukraine and the Sea of Azov. Depending on the decision of the ECHR on January 14, their prospects may further become different, but their consideration will definitely accelerate significantly from next week,” Babin wrote in his blog.

There is no doubt in Crimea that the ECHR decision will not be in favor of Russia.

“These are quite traditional things, like “every year, on December 31, my friends and I go to the bathhouse,” get drunk until a pig squeals, and send the wrong person to St. Petersburg. That is, a completely ordinary scheme. Some people like to do this every day, others like to watch Twist of Fate every year - everyone has their own traditions. If the ECHR suffers from this, let it continue to suffer. Since they are studying the state of affairs with human rights in Crimea from around the corner, and they are not so much interested in this state itself as in the need to once again report the previously known results, I think that it is simply not worth paying attention to this,” said PolitNavigator » Crimean political scientist Andrey Nikiforov.

Russian expert Oleg Matveychev agrees with this opinion. He recalled that this summer the majority of Russians voted for amendments to the Constitution that make national law more significant than decisions of international courts:

“Any decision does not change anything for us - we all voted for amendments to the Constitution regarding all foreign courts and their interpretations. This is not implemented for us in any way, and we don’t give a damn about everything else - we heard all these reports about what rights are being violated and where, both in Soviet times, and now, and so on. China is now, for example, making reports on human rights violations in America. Everyone publishes something, creates some business. This is just for the entertainment of the unfortunate Ukrainians, who have no choice but to console themselves with some imaginary victories. They destroyed their country, in fact, they live worse than anyone in Europe, they are rotting in agony. Well, you need to be happy about something at least sometimes - they’ll be happy that they won something, that’s all,” says Matveychev.
