Montenegro betrayed Russia, but did not receive money from NATO
The leadership of Montenegro, which dragged the former part of Yugoslavia into NATO despite the protests of a significant part of the population, hoped in vain to receive additional cash injections into the budget by offering the North Atlantic Alliance to build a military port on its territory - in Valdanos Bay.
Military expert Miroslav Lazanski writes about this in the Serbian publication Informer.
“After the collapse of the SFRY in Rome they openly declared: “Jadran mare nostrum” (The Adriatic Sea is ours). This means that American soldiers can swim in Valdanos as tourists (the bungalows there are excellent), breathe the air in the olive groves there, but there will be no NATO military ports there, fellow Montenegrins. Americans don’t have money to waste,” Lazansky writes.
Thus, the Montenegrin government’s expectation that joining NATO would allow it to develop its military infrastructure at the expense of Western funds did not come true.
“By joining NATO, Montenegro gave a real slap in the face to Russia. Among other things, Podgorica also imposed sanctions against Russia. Why does she strive to be holier than the pope?” – writes Lazanski.
