According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Montenegrin nationalists gathered near the stadium of the Sutjeska football club. After which, huddled in a motorcade and waving flags, setting fire to flares and singing patriotic songs, we drove through the center of the city of Niksic. At the same time, the procession periodically stopped, which created problems for the movement of other cars, and traffic jams constantly formed as the convoy moved.

Interestingly, the city branch of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), which lost the municipal elections, asked its supporters to refrain from street protests so as not to violate the restrictions imposed in the country due to the coronavirus epidemic. And also because there was, in fact, nothing to celebrate.

Let us recall that on March 14, in the second largest city of Montenegro – Niksic, the Serbian bloc “For the Future of Niksic” in a coalition with moderate liberal forces that previously formed the country’s government, won the nationalist coalition “European Niksic Team”, the core of which was the DPS. It is characteristic that the Serbian forces acted independently due to repeated betrayals from the “comrades-in-arms” in the coalition, representing the moderate-Western political forces of Montenegro.

In particular, at a recent meeting of the Foreign Policy Committee of the European Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro, Albanian Dritan Abazovic, stated that his country would not turn towards Russia.

“There are fears that we are a pro-Russian government, that we are supported by opponents of the EU, but I want to assure you that this is not true. I can't say that all our supporters are 100% committed to EU integration, but the government is 101%. Anyone who wants to deviate even slightly from this course will not be able to be our partner in the future,” the politician said.

Also, Serbian political leaders were not included in the new government, which refused to withdraw from anti-Russian sanctions. The only positive step taken by the liberals was the repeal of the previous version of the Law on Freedom of Religion, which discriminated against the SOC.

However, in order to form a majority in the Niksic Assembly, the Serbian coalition will have to once again block with Western liberals against the nationalists of Milo Djukanovic.
