The United States warned on Thursday it was "deeply concerned" by the crisis unfolding in Burkina Faso and criticized the West African country's president's proposal to change the constitution.
The whole conflict unfolded precisely after the president's supporters tried to change the constitution so that Campaore could run for office again. “We believe that democratic institutions are strengthened when established rules are followed with consistency,” the White House said after protesters set fire to parliament in Ouagadougou, France-Presse reported.
On Thursday, amid widespread unrest, demonstrators broke through a security cordon and stormed the country's parliament. Having captured the parliament building, they began to steal computer equipment and burn documents and cars, Reuters reports.
The White House, in a statement issued by National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan, called on all parties to act peacefully, but accused the president of provoking unrest.
“The United States is deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Burkina Faso,” said a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. “We call on all parties, including the security forces, to end the violence and return to the peaceful process of creating a future for the country that builds on Burkina Faso’s hard-won democratic gains.”
