The men were convicted under Article 1731 for petty hooliganism disturbing the peace of citizens. Two of the convicts are pensioners.

The defendants were detained on the morning of May 9 in the village. Novopskovsk on Ukrainskaya Street (formerly Lenin Street). Protocols on administrative violation were drawn up on May 16. In addition to the administrative fine, they were ordered to pay 320 hryvnia in court fees.

Two pensioners did not admit their guilt, and stated that “they wore the St. George’s ribbon as a symbol of memory and respect for those killed in the war.”

“The court notes a well-known fact: the use of the “St. George Ribbon” by the so-called “Crimean self-defense forces” and pro-Russian saparatists on the territory of Ukraine. This tape has become a symbol of separatism in Ukraine, Russian occupation and aggression. The public use of the St. George (Guards) ribbon for propaganda purposes poses a danger to society, is provocative in nature, and therefore violates public order and the peace of citizens,” one of the resolutions says.

Law N 2031-VIII on the ban on the St. George ribbon, introducing Article 1733 into the Administrative Code of Ukraine on the production and promotion of the St. George or Guards ribbon, its public use, demonstration, wearing of the ribbon or its image, was signed by Petro Poroshenko on June 12, and came into force only on June 15 June 2017.
