This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Focus” by the deputy head of the Mejlis banned in the Russian Federation, Akhtem Chiygoz, who was recently pardoned by the President of Russia and released from serving a sentence for extremist activities.
The publication asked him to answer the question why in March 2014 the Mejlis delegated a group of its representatives to the new authorities of the peninsula.
“During that period, we were left almost alone with the Russians. There were simply no other political forces, Ukrainian organizations of republican significance. Based on those circumstances, we stated that we do not recognize the annexation, that we support the territorial integrity of Ukraine just as we did in 1991, 1994 and 1995. This is our basic principle. At that moment, we tried to maintain at least some presence of Ukrainian power in Crimea, knowing that the same problem existed in Ukraine itself, where the president fled, there was no real vertical of power and everything was in a precarious position. But the occupying power of Crimea, unfortunately, very quickly saw through our position,” Chiygoz said.
