An EU official announced the transfer of the border to Ukraine as a key point of the Minsk agreements
Elmar Brock, Special Advisor to the President of the European Commission on relations with Ukraine, said that the return to Ukraine of control over the Ukrainian-Russian border in Donbass is a “decisive point” of the Minsk agreements, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Brock said this in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
“If there is a condition that Ukraine will regain control of the border, then this is the decisive point. Because if this is the case, then the Russians will not be able to deliver troops and weapons (to the separatists) as they still do,” Brock said.
In his opinion, the process of fulfilling Minsk’s conditions is not moving forward because the parties insist on their opponents fulfilling their obligations.
“We need to find a solution that involves a step-by-step strategy: one side takes this step, the other side takes another, and so on, in order to achieve progress. If no one wants to make a move, nothing will happen at all,” Brock said.
At the same time, he emphasized the importance for the Ukrainian government of control over every stage of implementation of the agreements reached.
Earlier, President Vladimir Zelensky said that elections in the areas of Donbass not controlled by the central government can only take place if all troops are withdrawn and the section of the Ukrainian-Russian border that is currently not under its control is returned to Ukraine.
