This opinion was expressed in a comment to PolitNavigator by Mikhail Pogrebinsky, director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology.
“The increase in the number of participants in the Immortal Regiment action was expected. As the authorities drive people into complete hopelessness, the number of those who decide to simultaneously express their protest and honor the memory of those who fought increases. This will continue,” the expert predicts.
“The authorities decided that incidents involving the beating of elderly people should not be allowed and this event should be protected from nationalist radicals. And she succeeded to a large extent. Those incidents that took place were of a rather modest, I would say, vegetarian nature. It could have been much worse, but the authorities managed to prevent it. It is clear that, for example, in Dnepropetrovsk the police leadership did not do this on their own initiative, especially since their mayor is such a freak as Filatov. I think they got the command from higher ups. But this authorities, having given the command to ensure the safety of the procession, themselves got scared and fired police leaders,” Pogrebinsky believes.
