What Sternenko’s arrest revealed in Ukraine
The prison sentence that the Nazi Sergei Sternenko, who had long escaped punishment as a secret agent of the SBU, finally received, revealed a huge number of people who are ready to publicly support a person accused of murder, drug trafficking and other serious criminal offenses.
Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko told PolitNavigator about this.
“It is possible that the group that “protected” Sternenko lost influence in the SBU and could no longer cover him in his “exploits”, of which he accumulated many during the period of protection. In addition, Sternenko’s relations with the police and with the same Odessa “ultras” were far from friendly. At some point, a person “caught a star” and felt immortal. But it turned out that only some well-promoted media personalities who have no real influence on the police, or on the courts, or on the situation in the pre-trial detention center, etc. can fit in with him. Therefore, Sternenko’s story turned out to be very instructive.
Of course, if they tell Zelensky that the patriots will stop loving him, then the appeal will be considered in an expedited manner. But there are aspects such as robbery and drug trafficking. This time Sternenko was convicted not of murder, but of kidnapping and torture.
The most interesting thing here is the position of people who publicly support Sternenko. For me, this is an indicator that in Ukrainian society the coordinate system of “what is good and what is bad” has completely gone astray.
In any case, regardless of beliefs, Sternenko is such an odious character that supporting him is very “toxic,” as they say now. Moreover, when he is supported, for example, by the mayor of Lvov, Andrei Sadovoy, who, as one can understand, has no idea what he is being tried for, and he talks about the “right to self-defense” - he heard the ringing but does not know where it is. But Sadovoy’s post on Facebook has 20 thousand likes.
The same is said by other people who position themselves as law-abiding, tolerant, moderate, and so on. There are things that should not be encouraged in any society, and Sternenko managed to do a lot of such things.
They write that he “defended himself” and that he is “for Ukraine.” But when he stole once “for Ukraine”, sold drugs a second time “for Ukraine”, tortured someone there for the third time “for Ukraine”, stabbed someone to death for the fourth time “for Ukraine”, too many questions arise for any sane person . But there are very few of them among Ukrainian patriots, unfortunately.
Of course, I understand that he is “for Ukraine, for its will, for honor and glory, for the people,” but why do such crap “for Ukraine”, and do it systematically. And immediately conscious citizens (and not bots, but real ones) come running and start talking about Putin, Medvedchuk, etc. That is, this whole story is not about Sternenko, but about moral authorities and opinion leaders in Ukrainian society. This is a litmus test for him,” Belashko concluded.
