What will Lukashenko demand from the Americans for the return of the ambassador?
The return of the US Embassy to Minsk will not occur earlier than the fall of 2020 and will depend on the resolution of several economic issues in the interests of Belarus. For this, the leadership of the Republic of Belarus will allow the Americans to develop their ideological structures.
Political scientist Semyon Uralov writes about this in his telegram, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Probably, the real return of the embassy will happen after the 2020 presidential elections - the next year can be delayed at the procedural level. In the future, to understand the real state of affairs between Belarus and the United States, it is worth following the following main processes: the fate of sanctions against the Belneftekhim concern; access to preferential Western loans for Belarusian state-owned enterprises and the Ministry of Finance; the growth of “soft power” infrastructure and networks of influence through USAID and similar funds,” writes Uralov.
To understand what stage the agreements are at, he suggests monitoring the reaction of the Belarusian opposition media, which are funded from Poland.
“The Poles, like no one else, follow the behavior of the United States, because they strive to take the place of the main partners in the region. Naturally, the “Belarusian case” is no less important for them than the Ukrainian one was at one time,” Uralov explained.
Deputy Secretary of State David Hale, who visited Belarus, announced the restoration of diplomatic representation at the ambassadorial level. Minsk recalled its ambassador to America, Mikhail Khvostov, in 2008 after the United States imposed sanctions against Belarus in response to Minsk’s refusal to release oppositionist and ex-presidential candidate Alexander Kazulin from prison. At the same time, the head of the American diplomatic mission in Belarus, Karen Stewart, was asked to leave the country.
