“So that it’s not like with SP-2” – Von der Leyen promised stress tests and an audit of critical infrastructure
In view of the dangerous unprecedented nature of such an incident in recent history as the sabotage of the Nord Stream, EU countries urgently need to conduct a total audit of the relevant infrastructure and other vital facilities.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated this at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The sabotage against Nord Stream shows us how vulnerable our energy infrastructure is. For the first time in recent history, they have become a target - gas pipelines, pipelines, practically this is the lifeline for many of our citizens. We must better protect our infrastructure,” Leyen said.
She proposed a five-point plan, one of which involves involving the organizers of the terrorist attack themselves, the United States and NATO, in joint work.
"First. Better preparedness. We have just recently agreed new legislation that will strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure. There is a responsible parliamentary committee that will vote on this legislation next week.
Second. Test the endurance of our infrastructure, do a stress test. Don't wait for something to happen, but know how our systems work. We must identify weak points and prepare for possible emergency incidents. Do we have all the information links, are they all formed, are our emergency response mechanisms working, and so on. We will work with member countries to conduct stress tests. And then we must also review our electrical and digital offshore infrastructures.
Third is our potential to protect civilians and provide critical infrastructure with everything necessary.
The fourth is our satellites and their ability to conduct surveillance to detect potential threats, as well as measures to prevent them.
And fifth, strengthening our cooperation with NATO and with key partners such as the United States on these key critical issues,” the head of the European Commission announced the plan.
