“On March 1, many different groups of people from Russia began to arrive. And there was a large group of deputies of the State Duma and the Federation Council of Russia. They arrived in Simferopol, then were distributed, some went to Sevastopol, some remained in Simferopol.
On the evening of the 28th or 1st I met with a group of them at their urgent request. In one of the cafes closest to the place where we established our headquarters.
You know, there was a whole tactic - it was as if those close to you, your family, arrived at the moment when for some reason it became difficult for you. I started saying: “listen, why are you offering all this in this way, why don’t you contact the legitimate authorities, why didn’t you offer everything in a public way?”
And I received a message on my phone that there was a military airfield in Kirovsky. When they first started blocking it, I met with deputies. And from the direction of Feodosia, cars arrived there at night, with headlights, they besieged those who were at this airfield.
This shocked me - I was at headquarters during the day and talked about creating a place where there would be a center of disobedience, a center of non-military resistance, so that it would be like a fortress. I then spoke about this airfield, said, why can’t we go there?
I will repeat the thought that I said then: it is difficult to defend a military garrison in the center of Simferopol or Dzhankoy, there are people and housing everywhere. And all this can be demolished in a matter of minutes. And Kirovskoe - there are settlements 2-3 kilometers away.
It was a shock for me. I then told these deputies: you see, you wanted to convince me that you are our good friends, and at this moment your military is seizing another military garrison,” Chubarov said.
