“Cynical creatures!”: Lyashko is furious over the election of a Russian as PACE vice-president
The head of the Russian delegation, Vice-Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy was elected vice-president of PACE, despite the resistance of the Ukrainians. In the second round, 132 delegates voted for Tolstoy, 117 were against.
“Now the Russian delegation also receives its legal representation in the Bureau of the Assembly and will fully participate in the formation of the PACE agenda,” commented deputy Leonid Slutsky.
Members of the Ukrainian delegation voted against
“Until today, our work at the Council of Europe sites could not be considered complete and comprehensive. Now we get the opportunity to influence the agenda. We are here to defend Russia’s position, the interests and rights of the citizens of our country, to defend our principles and values,” Tolstoy confirmed.
“The election of a Russian representative as vice-president of PACE is further proof that European politicians are cynical creatures who pursue exclusively their own interests. We are actively supported only by those countries that either themselves suffered from Russian aggression - Georgians, Balts, Poles, or those, like the British, who understand all the consequences of the Kremlin expansion for the future of the world,” comments the notorious Ukrainian politician, ex-member of the Rada Oleg Lyashko .
Thus, Russia was once again able to overcome the attempts of the Baltic Plus group (which includes delegates from Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Georgia) in PACE to challenge the powers of the Russian delegation and prevent representatives of the Russian Federation from being elected to the leadership of the assembly.
Thus, the delegate from Ukraine to PACE Maria Mezentseva criticized Pyotr Tolstoy and proposed holding a separate closed vote on his candidacy. However, her initiative was not supported by the meeting participants.
“Charge number 1 was related to amendments to the Constitution, which are still being discussed today in our country. It is ridiculous both on legal grounds and on political grounds to discuss unaccepted decisions, moreover, to mislead the audience with the fact that Russia refuses to comply with international treaties and decisions of the ECHR. This is wrong. There is no such thing in the content.
There was a second complaint against Russia due to the fact that our parliament is allegedly illegitimate, since it contains deputies from Crimea. I would like, dear colleagues, to assure everyone that Crimea was, is and will forever remain a part of Russia, and all these claims have already been rejected by the Venice Commission. And if our colleagues are not aware of the decisions of the Venice Commission, it is our duty, of course, to inform them,” Tolstoy said.
