Daily Times: Brexit, sanctions against Russia and war in Ukraine are eroding German influence in Europe
Pakistan Daily Times in European Politics Review notesthat despite active shuttle diplomacy, Angela Merkel’s influence in EU affairs is weakening, and German Foreign Minister Steinmeier is in private conversations looking for an alternative to the Minsk agreements to resolve the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. “The question is how to turn Minsk into something else,” says Steinmeier. “For all parties involved in this agreement, it is becoming more and more politically unprofitable.”

“For almost ten years, Europe has been governed from Berlin. The EU's response to the euro crisis was made in Berlin. Merkel’s leadership could be seen both in Minsk, during the search for a way out of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, and last year with the EU agreement with Turkey aimed at reducing the flow of migrants to Europe,” the publication notes.
"I don't know what Merkel means when she talks about the 'spirit of Bratislava,'" said Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. “If things go further, then we will not be talking about the spirit of Bratislava, but about the ghost of Europe,” the Pakistani publication quotes the politician.
“The issue of sanctions imposed against Russia in connection with the crisis in Ukraine may become another test for German influence,” the publication also says.
