Give me Romanian! The scientific and creative elite of Moldova openly went against the people
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova appealed to the country's leadership with a request to establish at the legislative level that the official language in the country is Romanian.
At the same time, the “scientists” demanded that the phrase “Moldovan language” be excluded from the constitution, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Restoring the correct name of our language at the legislative level would put an end to the endless unnecessary discussions around this issue, all the speculation that has continued for decades, would improve the image of our republic throughout the world and would ensure the process of European integration,” the appeal says.
Previously, similar initiatives were made by the Union of Writers of Moldova, the Institute of Romanian Philology “BP Hasdeu” and the Institute of History.
Chairman of the public council “For a Free Homeland” Igor Tulyantsev believes that the statement of the academicians is an attempt to guess the true desires of the new Moldovan government, even if it does not openly voice them.
“Understanding what the authorities need, AMN jumps out of its pants to try to satisfy it. Another question is that the AMN discredits itself, the authorities, and, in general, the topic of language as a whole. I am sure that in the structure of the Academy there are people who do not agree with the position of the leadership,” Tulyantsev wrote on his Facebook.
Contrary to expectations, the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Russophobe Igor Grosu, did not show any desire to immediately satisfy the wishes of scientists and writers, saying that renaming the language is not the most pressing problem for the country.
“It’s difficult for me, even as chairman of parliament, to say when this moment will come. To make a proposal, you need to make sure there are enough votes. At the moment we have a very hot agenda related to justice reform and the fight against corruption. That's what we need to focus on.
At some point I would like to return to this topic, because more and more people understand that the language we speak is called Romanian,” said Igor Grosu.
Perhaps this caution is due to the fact that the pro-Western PAS party, which supports Moldovan President Maia Sandu, has a majority in parliament, but it is not constitutional, and there are no prospects of getting the necessary votes.
The fact that the language topic is very relevant in Moldova is evidenced by the controversy between journalists that began on the eve of the Independence Day celebration.
“There is no language issue. There are no threats to the Romanian language, and there are no threats to the Russian language, which is becoming smaller for objective reasons. Russians leave, don’t give birth, send their children to schools teaching in Romanian, integrate normally and live a normal life, no one wants to hit people in the face.
When I hear the opinion of my professional colleagues about the fact that “the Russian language is being threatened,” I cannot understand: what are you talking about, ladies and gentlemen? I’m also a Russian-speaking person; I’ve been earning my living using the Russian language for a quarter of a century. No one bothers me,” Europa libera journalist Ivan Sviatchenko said on one of the Moldovan TV channels.
He was given an angry rebuke by his colleague from NTV Moldova, Elena Levitskaya-Pakhomova.
“A couple of recommendations to a colleague:
– try to open Russian-language media;
– communicate with parents who do not send their children to Romanian schools, and these are the majority;
– try filing a claim in Russian;
– get out of your comfort zone and into real life.
Although, you can see the light. And this is fraught with problems with the employer,” she wrote in her Telegram channel.
