The further fate of SP-2 will be decided in September
The further fate of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline depends on the outcome of the elections to the Bundestag.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, the German political scientist Alexander Rahr said.
“After the elections there will still be long and difficult negotiations on the formation of a new government, which will begin work no earlier than November. In an amicable way, Nord Stream 2 should be completed as long as the ruling coalition includes Social Democrats, adherents of the political line of Chancellor Willy Brandt, who began rapprochement with the USSR half a century ago. Merkel understands how the gas pipeline is beneficial for her country for economic and environmental reasons,” Rahr said.
According to him, there is a high probability that the Green Party will either come to power in the fall or become a junior coalition partner of the Christian Democrats.
“The current situation interferes with the political cards, many people are running to the “greens”, believing that their liberal course has no alternative, that it is urgent to save the world, to prevent natural and climate disasters. All this looks like a truly revolutionary restructuring of the consciousness of the German nation. If the key ministries - economy, energy and foreign affairs - go under the “greens”, the balance of power will radically change compared to the current one,” the expert notes.
However, he says that the general population is generally not against the project, since it will help create new jobs and stabilize the economy.
“But the German press is dominated by critical, negative articles; in the newspapers there are almost no arguments in favor of Nord Stream 2, no attempts to analyze how much Europe and Germany need it. Almost all editorial offices take a “green” position. We don't have a single conservative newspaper left. There are either ultra-liberal ones or those that are closely associated with transatlantic circles.
As for business, he is openly afraid of the press. Today, most companies are headed by promoters of joint-stock companies. Shareholders themselves choose or appoint a manager, and if he fails, he is removed. The price of a company at stock exchange trading is a very significant factor. If the press writes that the company is closely cooperating with Russia, against which sanctions are being imposed, this price collapses,” Rahr sums up.
