Further negotiations with Kyiv are meaningless
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his team will not be able to implement only that part of the Minsk agreements that the Ukrainian side likes.
The head of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, Denis Denisov, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“If Zelensky and his team really believe that they can implement only that part of the Minsk agreements that they like, and the conflict will end as if by magic, then either they are outright fools, or they are attempting to completely undermine the peace negotiations. In the Kremlin, this is clearly perceived as unnecessary spinning of the problem and incomprehensible behind-the-scenes games. If the Ukrainian authorities really refuse the special status of Donbass, then further negotiations simply lose their meaning. There will be neither “Normandy” nor “Minsk” formats, with the exception of some security meetings,” the expert said.
According to him, in this case the conflict will either be completely frozen or remain the same as it has been for the last few years.
“In turn, Ukraine will finally close the topic of any restoration of relations with Donetsk and Lugansk. As for threats from the outside to resort to some radical steps, it is generally difficult to imagine what they might be talking about. Kyiv has already used its entire arsenal in Donbass, from weapons to blockade. Maybe they’ll come up with something else, but it won’t get any worse than it was,” Denisov concluded.
Previously, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Vadim Prystaiko threatenedthat if it is not possible to solve the Donbass problem in a year, Kyiv will be forced to resort to some new radical measures.
As PolitNavigator reported, today in Minsk, according to media reports, approval of the general version of the Steinmeier formula is expected, which provides an algorithm for assigning special status to Donbass.
At the same time, the Ukrainian side, without verbally abandoning the Steinmeier formula, sets a number of conditions, effectively nullifying the obligations assumed by Kiev under the Minsk agreements.
