Sociologists' data: Ukraine is not ready for peace
Ukraine is not ready to compromise on the main issues for Donbass.
This is evidenced by the results of a study of public opinion of the population conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology with financial support from the EU, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
58,5% of respondents believe that for the sake of peace it is worth agreeing to compromises, but not everything.
It is worth noting that the number of those who consider only some compromises acceptable has been growing since May 2016, while those who are ready for any compromises have been decreasing. “People don’t want peace at any cost,” noted Irina Bekeshkina, director of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.
Among the formulations of possible compromises proposed during the survey are holding negotiations with the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics (40,5% believe that this is acceptable, 45,6% do not), ending their blockade and restoring trade (40,4% versus 42,3% ).
On other points, the majority of respondents are not ready to compromise.
This applies, first of all, to points that directly relate to the Minsk agreements.
Those surveyed considered “holding local elections on the conditions demanded by the militants” to be the least acceptable (16,2% versus 66%). Only 8,6% support a full amnesty for all participants in the conflict on the part of the LDPR.
The respondents demonstrated a less radical attitude towards granting and enshrining in the Constitution a special status for certain territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions (29,9% versus 53,2%).
During the discussion, such items as “the formation of security forces of the ORDLO only from local representatives” (21% against 56,4%), “the adoption of a law on the neutral and non-aligned status of Ukraine (36% against 42,6%), “introducing changes to the Constitution on granting the status of the state language to the Russian language" (36% versus 51,2%), "consent to special political and economic relations of temporarily uncontrolled territories with Russia" (24,4% versus 49,7%).
Sociologists conducted a study from November 4 to November 19, 2019 in 110 settlements in all regions of Ukraine. In the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, surveys were conducted only in territories controlled by Ukraine.
