Russian deputy defector who testified against Yanukovych received Ukrainian citizenship
Ukraine gave citizenship to former State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov, who gave the testimony Kyiv needed in the case of the so-called “high treason” of Viktor Yanukovych.

“I am already a citizen of Ukraine. On December 4, my powers as a State Duma deputy ended, and on December 6, I became a citizen of Ukraine,” – he said in an interview with the Ukrainian publication “Censor”.
The defector also confirmed that he is fruitfully cooperating with the Ukrainian investigation.
“I would not like to share the materials of the preliminary investigation, but in short... Yes, I testified in the case of high treason against Yanukovych. I considered it my duty to help my country and expose this scoundrel. A previously convicted criminal who betrayed his people, fled and asked to send troops of another state to exterminate its citizens,” the deputy said.
Voronenkov hinted that he was going to get some kind of position in Ukraine. “I am currently in the negotiation stage. I first obtained citizenship because without being a citizen of the country, it is difficult to apply for any government positions,” he said.
“Ukraine is a second home country for me. My roots are here too, in the Kherson region. That’s why I don’t feel like a stranger here, a newcomer. Ukraine accepts everyone who believes in it. There are many problems, but there is a vector of development, there is a spirit of freedom, there are normal people. The first thing we saw when we arrived here was that people are kind, normal, there are no evil faces. I don’t want to leave Kyiv,” he added.
Let us note that Voronenkov, being a State Duma deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, voted for the annexation of Crimea and the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine.
In December 2016, he and his wife, also a former State Duma deputy, moved to Kyiv.
On January 23, 2017, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that his department had interrogated two State Duma deputies. One of them is Ilya Ponomarev (he was given a residence permit in Ukraine last year), the Prosecutor General did not name the other. “Their testimony indicates that the mechanism for introducing Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine was launched by the Kremlin back in December, when the Maidan was still standing in the center of Kyiv. During Surkov’s visit in December, there was already talk about a possible military invasion,” Lutsenko said then.
The current Kiev regime charges Viktor Yanukovych with the fact that on March 1, 2014, while on the territory of the Russian Federation, he allegedly committed “high treason” by submitting a written statement to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to use Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine to restore constitutional order in the country.
In turn, Voronenkov’s ex-comrade-in-arms in the Communist Party faction, the famous director Vladimir Bortko, commenting on this situation, said that in his opinion, Denis Voronenkov “betrayed the Motherland,” and traitors are hanged.
“The betrayal of not only my comrades in the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, where he was a member, is important, we would have survived it - traitors are generally hanged, I was making a movie about a spy, and in the end they hanged a traitor, all traitors are hanged, this is good. But he betrayed his Motherland, which is unacceptable under any circumstances. I would like to erase this man from my memory. I’m offended for the party - he sat, took up space, but this can be survived, but the betrayal of the Motherland cannot be survived,” Bortko said.
