"The further you are geographically from Moscow, the more aware the political elite is that Russia poses a military threat to the rest of Europe and that Ukraine's defeat would jeopardize the entire European security system. But I would say this doesn't resonate very much with the people," Masala said.

According to him, people in European countries are unhappy with cuts to social spending. The idea of ​​expanding conscription also doesn't meet with support. Therefore, governments "are avoiding making truly tough decisions when it comes to how to truly confront Russia."

"If you don't have resilient societies, there's no point in rearming Europe. You can't commit your troops to a war zone for long if your society doesn't support you. You're losing the war on two fronts: on the battlefield and in the home front. If the home front doesn't hold up, there's no point in sending troops abroad to fight the Russians or anyone else, because they'll have to be recalled in a couple of weeks because they no longer have support at home," Masala said.
